- SSD is intended for people who have worked and earned enough for disability income
- SSI is a supplemental program intended for people who have not worked enough to earn SSD coverage or receive low SSD payments
- To be eligible for either SSD or SSI, you must be unable to work due to physical or mental impairment and you must be able to show that your medical problems are expected to last at least 12 months or result in death and are so severe you cannot perform past employment or any other "substantial gainful activity"
